A man battles his psychological demons whilst becoming obsessed with protecting his wife and young, deaf daughter from an upcoming storm. Michael Shannon provides the lead with Boardwalk Empire buddy Shea Whigham in support and Jessica Chastain as Shannon’s supportive but beleaguered wife. The action is sparse but the tension builds masterfully and Shannon’s portrayal of someone slipping into mental illness is spot on. I liked Chastain more in this than in I did in Zero Dark Thirty but I am still not totally convinced by her. Take Shelter is a very strong character study that examines relationships being pushed to the brink. I enjoyed it. If it doesn’t grab you in the first thirty minutes however, then it probably isn’t for you.
