Street thug Rusty James struggles to escape from his older brothers shadow. Coppola brings us this slice of Americana post Apocalypse Now and in between Godfather films. Talented cast including Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, Dennis Hopper, Nic Cage, Laurence Fishburne, Chris Penn etc. This film is a postcard from the America that Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits (who has a cameo) inhabit through their music. It is all motorcycles and all night diners, capturing the romance of life on the wrong side of the tracks and the death of the American dream. It is debatable whether this vision of America actually exists or has ever existed but when it is directed and acted so brilliantly, who cares? Being Coppola it is the direction that is the real star. So many gorgeous scene’s and the decision to film in almost entirely stark black and white pays off.
