Sam Raimi brings us the prequel to The Wizard of Oz and the story of the great and powerful wizard of Oz himself. Most of all OtGaP feels like a missed opportunity. With someone of Sam Raimi’s experience (Spiderman, Evil Dead etc), I was expecting a dark reimagining of Oz. More Return to Oz than the Wizard of Oz. Raimi’s vision of Oz is very much for children however. The other problem here is that James Franco is just not charismatic enough to play such an iconic character. Whilst I found the back story of the witches and Oz himself interesting, that is already there in the source material and Raimi could have done a lot more to bring it to life. The last thirty minutes save it from being a pretty terrible movie.
