Killer Joe – 6.5/10.

Veteran director William Friedkin (Exorcist) brings us this weird little tale about a man who puts a hit out on his mother for the insurance money. A strong cast for such an off beat movie. Gina Gershon, Emile Hirsch (remember him?), an excellent Thomas Haden Church and a wonderfully madcap Matthew McConaughey being the main players. Good acting and some memorable scenes but Killer Joe doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. Gangster? Torture porn? Comedy? I like Emile Hirsch but the best scenes in Killer Joe are the ones he isn’t in. This is worrying for an actor whose career seems to be fading out after his unforgettable turn in Into the Wild. Young actress Juno Temple also stands out as the sweet and naive Dottie Smith. One to watch for the future maybe.
