Tony Kaye’s little known follow up to American History X see Adrian Brody playing a substitute teacher who sees his life change on his most recent assignment.
An impressive cast featuring Marcia Harden, James Caan, Lucy Liu, Christina Hendrick and a cameo from Walter White himself Bryan Cranston bring Detachment to life. The messages contained in Detachment (the school system is failing, teachers are under appreciated etc) are just as strongly presented as the anti racism message in American History X. Brody’s performance just can’t come close to Ed Norton’s though but it is perhaps unfair to compare two films released thirteen years apart. The arty aspects correlate well with the urban decay and if you like bleak cinema you should definitely give this a look.
