A rebellious man struggles to adapt to life in a rural prison.
While The Hustler is definitely still my favourite Paul Newman film, Cool Hand Luke is right up there as well. There can be no doubting that Newman has an electric screen presence and is damn cool but his vulnerability when broken by the guards shows a side to him I have never seen before and I found it believable and moving. George Kennedy won an Oscar as Drag – The ‘Red’ to Newmans ‘Dufrense’ and the two have a wonderful chemistry. Cool Hand Luke can make predictable viewing at times but this is only because it has been so influential on other prison/military films that have come after. It also features one of the most famous lines in movie history ‘What we have here is a failure to communicate’ and is #147 in IMDB’s top 250.
