Confessions of a Dangerous Mind – 8/10.

Writer Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine etc) and Director George Clooney (his directorial debut) bring us the ‘true’ story of game show host/creator Chuck Barris. This is an adaptation of a book that Barris himself has written, in which he claims that he had a secret double life as a CIA hitman. A quick scan of his wiki page neither confirms or denies whether this is true but I get the impression it is all fabricated. Like with fellow bullshitter Chopper though, you kind of want it to be true because it makes the story so much better. A stellar cast featuring Sam Rockwell as Barris, a truly excellent Drew Barrymore as his girlfriend of sorts and also Julia Roberts, Clooney himself and Maggie Gyllenhaal, all do a good job in bringing the story and the characters to life. Rockwell in particular shows why he has become so well thought of in recent years with another compelling turn. Appears to have been a bit overlooked at the time.
