Ben Affleck does me proud once again. Gotta love that Affleck!
A true story about the CIA operation to rescue six hostages from Iran under the guise of a film crew making a science fiction film in Iran. No matter what you think of Ben Affleck as a man or as an actor you can’t argue with his directorial ability. This is his third film after Gone Baby Gone and The Town. All three are excellent.
As a director Affleck reminds me of Clint Eastwood. He picks good stories and he tells them well without succumbing to the need to make them more ‘Hollywood’. Argo is probably his most well made film to date, he builds the tension masterfully and had me on the edge of my seat for the final hour. The cast is full of those actors that make you think ‘what do I know them from?’ and they all do well, the chemistry between the hostages is particularly impressive.
It is a shame that Affleck missed out on a Best Director nomination at the Oscars this year but if he carries on making films as good as this it wont be long before the academy do come calling.
