Francis Ford Coppola nearly killed everybody involved in the name of art. Apocalypse Now is glorious vindication.

ApocalypseNow

You all know the story, and if you don’t, remedy this immediately. The direction is peerless, not just the cinematography but the lighting and the super human performances that Coppola managed to wring out of his cast. Which brings us to the acting… holy cow the acting. Martin Sheen put so much into this role that it literally almost killed him. Marlon Brando is at his haunting best. The support from Dennis Hopper and Robert Duvall is outstanding. This has to go down as one of the best acted films ever made – right up there with Zodiac and Glengarry Glen Ross. On top of this the influential soundtrack is perfect and iconic.

Big statement coming up: I think this is Coppola’s best film. Better than The Godfather films. A spellbinding masterpiece.
